Is Slovenia a good choice for expats?

Have you been thinking of becoming an expat in Slovenia?

Slovenia is a hidden gem in central Europe. It is located on the mediteranian coast, on the south side of the Alps, neigbouring Austria on the north, Italy on the west, Hungary on the east and Croatia in the south.

Thinking of the French riviera or Austrian alps… you can find all the beauty in this small country. It is known for its mountains (Julian alps, Karavanke alps and Kamnik - Savinja alps), the mediteranian sea (42 km of coastline), pristine rivers like Soča and Sava river, beautiful lakes (Bled, Bohinj and others), fresh water springs, mighty waterfalls (Savica, Peričnik) and much more.

So why move here?

Coming to Slovenia, you will be in awe of the friendlines of the people. Everyone feel accepted here. Slovenians are very friendly and warm people. Think of a character mix of Austrian and Balkan influences. It depends on the region you choose in Štajerska you find warm and friendly people that will invite you to their homes and break bread with you. In Gorenjska, people are hard working but are not generous - they like to save all their money. In Primorska region by the sea, people are easygoing and in Central Slovenia you will find people that are less open on the outside, but very nice on the inside.

It is easy to adjust to life in Slovenia as the people here are almost bilingual. Besides Slovenian, they all speak English, and a lot of the either Italian (near the coast), or German (on the north). They also now Croatian, Bosnian, Serbian and Hungarian (on the east).

Slovenia is know for being one of the safest countries in the world. It is still common in some cities to leave the door unlocked, knowing it is safe. If you lose something, people will often try to find you and return it to you. You can even leave your bike unattended. Except in the capital Ljubljana. Do not leave your bike unattended there. You have been warned.

Slovenia is an independed country since 1991. Before the world wars, it was par of the Austro-Hungarian empire. Later it was part of the first Yugoslavia and second socialist Yugoslavia. After the political turmoil there, it has reoriented itself towards the west. It has a stable capitalist and democratic society. It is part of the European union since 2004 and it uses EURO as its currency since 2007.

The free education and healthcare system is a relic from the past socialist system. But do not be fooled by its origin. Both of them are modern, state of the art systems. Some of the schools in the country are amongst the best in the world and their scientists and professor also. The healthcare system is very good and everybody gets the same and free treatment.

If you like indoor and outdoor sports, you will not be disappointed. Slovenia is known as the country with the most Olympic medal per capital. It also has phenomenal world leading sportsman in basketball (Dončič), skiing (Maze), football (Oblak, Ilič, Kampl), cycling (Pogačar and Roglič), hockey (Kopitar) and many more. You will live among stars and legends.

The sports infrastructure is not lacking. From famous ski resorts, to miles long cycling paths and hiking trails (10.000 km), football and basketball pitches, some of the best golf resorts. In this country you have it all and in abundance. Any sport you like, you will find a place to practise it.
